I spent much of my childhood sailing and swimming in Derwentwater and the becks that surround it. The Lakes are certainly warm enough for swimming in, especially in sheltered parts, from early June through to the beginning of September. My parents have photographic evidence of my brothers and I swimming in a deep pool in Borrowdale (Langstrath Beck) in late April, before the leaves on the trees are fully out.

I remember Derwentwater freezing on several occasions. Keswick tourist office used to have a slide show including a wintertime scene with my brothers and I playing on our sledge on the ice. I seem to remember the lake being used by lots of iceskaters. This would have been sometime in the Seventies
