It's possible even if Squashy Hat really was 15-20 years older than Nancy. Myself I'd have guessed he was nearer 40, but that doesn't make such a liaison impossible. Improbable maybe.
Since we saw a short scene from a much larger document, we have none of the background as to why Nancy and Squashy Hat became a pair -- and of course Ed may have begun with that as a fait accompli anyhow. Or Ed could be "tying up the ends" as other authors have done in extrapolating the future of the characters. I think when you do that there's a tendency to establish linkages between all of the known characters, as introducing unknowns is not especially productive. I recall a few "what happened to all of them" narratives that have circulated or been in MM, and this tends to be a general characteristic. And more challenging than simply inventing outsiders and "they all lived happily ever after."
