Thinking back (way back!) to when I was 14 and had a crush on the girl next door, I recall that I would do all the sailing, to show off my skill and daring. Only after I grew out of that phase (and we remained good friends, as we do to this day) did I notice, and would I admit to myself, that she was the better sailor.
Likewise, I can see an early-twenties Timothy, himself only recently out of adolescence, being much more embarrassed by being around "a bunch of kids." If he was in his 30s or older, it wouldn't have bothered him in the same way. So, while I admit I hadn't thought of him that way before, I can easily be convinced of him having a younger age.
Besides being fun speculation, this thread has shown me some new insights into the characters. Thanks!
