When young, I lived part of the time in a cottage outside a village near Coventry [or at least the remains of Coventry]. Lighting was by kerosene lamps, and I remember the improvement when my father brought home a Tilley lamp, and we could really see what was going on! The radio was powered by glass lead-acid "accumulators", which I think were recharged at the garage in the nearest village.
