The island that is most like "Wildcat Island" is Peel Island on Coniston
Water (the next big lake west of Windermere). It's a bit small, doesn't
have a suitable "Lighthouse Tree" and the landing place pretty dinky.
But! it has the "secret harbour". On my first trip to England (I live in
Toronto) in 1972, I read somewhere that Arthur Ramsome had divulged
some information about the setting of Swallows and Amazons, specifically
that the island was on another lake. When I studied the ordnance survey
maps (We would call them topographic maps over here.) of the various
lakes I found that Peel Island had a suspicious bunch of rocks at its
southern end. It was also in approximately the right position in the
lake. Today I am still pleased at remembering what I saw the next day
when I rented a boat and investigated. Now you can find pictures
of the island on this website and read about Arthur Ransome's world in
many books also listed on this site.
