In America we hand the Professor title out to every Tom, Dick, and these days add the female name of choice. This is not meant in a derogatory sense, just to give you some idea of the current numerical balance. But using the title does have an advantage of providing the academic students with something to aim for. My old Australian Hydrology Lecturer, who was one of the most brilliant men I have known, never made it past Senior Lecturer. Sad really.

I think we have 4 Lady Professor's in Construction Science which has a fair share of students who in former days (before an Aggie education) could be called redneck, and now we prefer to say they are educated Former Students. (We call our students here Aggies, after Texas Agricultural and Mechanical University.)

Also the students usually call me Professor which sets a tone to class, which helps with the mood and discipline.
