Centreboards and cabins are not incompatible I have seen a number of designs which achieve this, but they do take up cabin space, sometimes a table top is fitted to make use of the casing. However, the drawings of D&G don't show a centreboard case.

A ship's boat as opposed to a life boat would probably have a long but not deep keel. Presumably the D&G was one of these. However, they are not so often double ended as the D&G is shown to be. It would be designed to row rather than sail but larger ones were fitted with sails too.
