Yes, but John Lambert is talking about Canada! The reason people often do feel embarrassed about 'class' in the UK is the 'guilt' factor. If you are 'middle class' then you should be ashamed of it! Whereas the good old working class - salt of the earth! etc. It is common in England to hear someone say 'I'm working class and proud of it'. No one ever says 'I'm middle class and proud of it'. Why is this? Well my personal view is that this is the result of decades of sub-Marxist influence in the media and education spheres, but this view would be strongly challenged, I dare say. What can't be challenged is that in the main the English are uneasy about 'class'. (Note I say 'English' - from experience I would say that the situation seems somewhat different in Scotland.)

Perhaps to show what I am getting at to non-UK readers, an anecdote would be useful. Many years ago, I used to take a copy of the newspaper 'The Times' into work every day. One of the staff (who proclaimed himself 'working class') would really have a go at me over this - 'You and your Times!' he would sneer, 'Huh, I suppose that makes you feel superior! What's wrong with the Mirror? (The 'Mirror' is a UK 'tabloid' newspaper). I ended up concealing the 'Times' so he wouldn't see it. Inverse snobbery is rife in England at present.

I can't bear the thought of my beloved Ransome characters getting caught up in all this bitterness. (Sorry - I didn't want to revive the 'class' debate, but I felt that John Lambert's posting needed a reply.)
