There is "internal evidence" that AR was indeed influenced by Childers - "The Riddle" is one of the books on the houseboat's bookshelf - Dorothea tries to read it, but is put off by the maps!

I am a fellow enthusiast for "The Compleat Cruiser" - which of course is based on another AR favourite - Isaak Walton! It took me some time to adjust to the American northeast coast setting, when I first read it, but on the second and subsequent readings I have felt quite at home!

There can be no doubt that boats have become cheaper in real terms, thanks to mass production of fibreglass ones over the past 40 years and the plywood kit boats of ten years before that. Thus, getting on the water has become relatively cheaper.
