Well, since I seem to have inadvertently started all this by my reference to Bob Blackett belonging to the officer class, may I just say that I am deeply middle class, and completely un-bothered about it!

If we are going to do an analysis of Swallows and Amazons characters in terms of their social class, it seems clear to me that the Blacketts are decidedly grander than the Swallows, who are just managing to hold on to middleclassness, due to the appalling size of their brood - five children, in the days when you chose "a baby or a Baby Austin"!

(Does anyone know whether the 1930's RN paid school fees for officer's children, and if so, was there a limit on the number of brats so paid for?)
