Mike,

The Australian culture is different and definitely changing from the 1950's from what I remember of it.

But thankfully it is not to the extremes of some countries and there is a respect for basic life that is missing in a lot of countries. Compare the mortatility statisitics for 0 to 1 year olds to get a good measure of what I am talking about. This is an excellent indicator of adequate access to the things needed to sustain life.

The language is changing a bit, although I notice at TAMU that the young American like the Aussie swear words and the old expressions, it is funny to see a bloke in 10 gallon hat and boots saying crikey and blimey as he cooks the meat.

What is the Royal Hospital School?

Further to John's mother - if she went to Boardign School in Sydney in the early 1900's then her people were probably from the Squatter Class and had money and land. They also terribly idolized the old country - did till the 1960's really - so marrying a poor British Sailor would not be a bad step nor one that would leave you in poverty - marrying rich woman has long been a British tradition. At least my old Scots people did the right thing and stole them from the English ......

I got the map book on the Lakes - just published by Cicerone Press - very very good. The maps are things of beauty and the comments are as good as AR and this site. I just wish they published a wall chart of the maps would be worth framing and hanging on the wall.

Although there is a long lecture on the perils of sailing and he has a bit to say about duffers etc... from AR. Pity really.

John Nichols
