"Getting into the Fifteen" doesn't necessarily imply "First Fifteen". My school was a rugby-playing one and there were fifteens at each year level ("Under 13", "Under 14" etc) that played competitively with similar teams from other schools -- including RHS Holbrook; only a few miles away. (I have one fond memory of RHS. The year I captained the Second XI at cricket they were the only team we beat. First defeat was at the Naval training school at Shotley that Commander Walker had led).

So John could simply have meant "The Fifteen for my year level".
