I stand to be corrected, but I believe that he started SA as a one off, but quickly began a sequel. Was the intended sequel not, in fact, PD? I seem to think that PD got started and was then interrupted by SD, perhaps at Johnathan Cape's request.

Certainly SA was a one off to begin with, but he very soon settled into the groove, so to speak. For one thing, writing a series of children's books offered him the financial security which he needed. From what we know of his working methods, he wrote chapters in almost random order, having the main scheme of the book settled, if not indeed before putting pen to paper, then quite early on. The incomplete state of CITN shows this process at work.
