Was there a two-year gap between the publication of SA and SD - because of course the earlier books were set when they were written, more-or-less, whereas some of the later ones must have been 'historical novels' (that might be pushing it a bit) unless the characters managed to avoid ageing at the quite the rate of the author... There are examples of that in series literature. If Dalziel and Pascoe had aged at the right level through the famous Reginald Hill detective books, Pascoe would have to be in his sixties in the recent books and Dalziel probably dead - whereas in fact they've aged less than ten years over a 30+ year period...
