Another book of this type is called _Sailing Around the World Single-Handed_ by Harry Pigeon. It is available in paperback (in the US at least, I don't know about elsewhere). Harry Pigeon was the second person to sail around the world single-handed, and the first to do so twice. The book is about his first trip.
He built a boat himself, taught himself to navigate, and set off, taking wonderful glass slide photos along the way (he also was a photgrapher). His third trip, in a different boat, was a honeymoon cruise (at the age of 75 no less!) but they were shipwrecked for several months in the Marquesas.
This quite remarkable man was my great uncle--he married my grandmother's older sister.
