The Royal Yachting Association issue a range of certificates from 'Competent Crew' up to Ocean going Yachtmaster. Trouble is that they all cost time and money to obtain - and some of the syllabus seems to me a bit iffy - for instance they seem to expect you to turn the engine on for the slightest emergency whereas I am certain that I can handle a boat more safely under sail - I'm probably just an oldie and too Ransome orientated.

The good thing is that none of these are compulsory in the UK and there doesn't seem to be any immediate pressure to bring in such rules.

The bad thing is that they ARE compulsory on the Continent. the exception is that you don't need one to operate a big boat there provided that you hire it - another instance where profits seem to dictate policy.
