Pipe smoking, to me growing up in the 1960s in England was more a past time of my grandfather's generation than my father's. The latter tended much more to cigarettes, probably as a result of the war time experience. My father, unusually, was a non-smoker but he did say that he found they cut his appetite as a teenager in a time of food rationing and so he had smoked then. He never got hooked and was able to give them up once he joined the army and got a fighting man's rations.

My grandfather on the other hand, a contemporary of Ransome, had a collection of pipes and often smoked them. Stalky, Tolkien, Buchan's heros (and villains) are all noted pipe smokers.
