I think that this is not so much a case of "product placement", which had probably been unheard of, as unconcious use of brand names as a generic name. There are many instances of this all around us; in the UK, "LandRover" has become the four-wheel-drive farmer's hack, no matter who made it. In the US, "Jello" was a brand of gelatinous dessert which became the common name for the generic product.
