I’ve just read the latest ‘Signals from TARSUS’ (kindly sent over to me by Dave T), and it was a breath of fresh air. This is a comparatively humble publication – 8 pages of A4 – but it makes up for that by the enthusiasm of its contributors. One lady (a frequent contributor) describes her various homes during the year, summer camp etc, and wonders which is her true home, and then concludes ‘Home is where my books are’. Yes, I like that! A new member gives a ‘resume’, and says, about reading AR – ‘Readers of the books cannot but help being caught up in them, being as it were an unseen character in the stories . . .’ Again a good insight.

On occasion (and I put my hand up here), it has been questioned whether Americans can really ‘get’ Ransome’s writing, bearing in mind cultural differences. On the evidence of Signals from TARSUS (reinforced by Ed K’s postings) they are completely plugged in, and possibly much nearer that elusive ‘spirit of Ransome’ than we are over here in the UK. Well done, Dave for producing such a good AR mag, and a mag (I shouldn’t say this but I will) which is refreshingly devoid of the attention-seeking ‘me, me’ stuff found in some UK 64-page productions (and website postings I regret to say).
