Very nice of you to make this observation, Peter. Dave T. does indeed do a great job and our modest newsletter is fun to read as a result of his efforts. Modest or not, it must take a lot of time. I have made but one contribution to it and will try to do more if I can find anything interesting to say (and the time to jot it down).

The question of cultural differences hindering our understanding of AR in the States is a very interesting one. Certainly we Americans miss things. Andrew’s thread below about product placement is but one example – even if we know what a named product is, we’re unlikely to appreciate its cultural significance.

But those cultural differences are one of the reasons some of us love the books. I spent a little time in the UK as a kid, and I very much enjoy being reminded of that time in the books’ language, landscape, and, well, culture. But I wonder if our distance also lends a little insight. I think of Ed’s posts of a year or so ago when he was typing the books into his computer. He would often make a comment that shed light on British culture precisely because it’s different from ours. I greatly admire his curiosity and observation. I have the bad tendency to skim over things I don’t really understand, while he would stop and think about it – a valuable trait.
