As an aside, I couldn't for the life of me think why I knew that one tyre track in the Big Six was Dunlop but I thought that the other make was Palmer until I looked up the passage and found it was John Bull.

Then just now it dawned on me. In Conan Doyle's The Priory School, Sherlock Holmes identifies two different sets of bicycle tracks. One was Dunlop, the other Palmer.

I am morally sure that this passage with the bicycle tracks at Ranworth was a gentle nod to Holmes as the great detective in Ransome's only detective story.
