I think that the reason camping gear did not accompany the Walkers to Holly Howe was that perhaps they were not considering that possibility - they had never been there before and had no idea with what they were going to spend their time. The sight of the island was the catalyst for their plans for adventure.
It would be interesting to consider what else (apart from camping on shore and pottering about in the Holly Howe bay) they would have done had Daddy's famous telegram said "Better safe than sorry"! But then there would have been no story... or would there?
