The fact that Commander Walker was particularly distinguished is confirmed by the fact that the Harwich Customs Officers knew at once who he was. Even in those quieter days routine changes in personnel at Ganges, even towards the top, can hardly have been everyday gossip in the port of Harwich.
He must have been "the Ted Walker who recaptured the steamer 'Chop Suey' from the Chinese pirates" ot "the Ted Walker who won a VC in the 'Leopard' at Jutland, or something of the sort.
