The Swallows and Amazons certainly are mature! I was about John's age when I first read the books in the 1950s, and I couldn't believe parents allowed their children to go off on adventures such as Ransome recounted. Either children in 1930s England matured more rapidly than we did two decades later in middle America, or AR took considerable license.
