Yes, that makes a lot of sense. I have travelled but infrequently in the Western part of the States, so I try to qualify any statements I make as pertaining to the Northeast where I am from. Regional variations are strong here (like Canada, it's a pretty big place).

I enjoy hearing your (and John Nichols') impressions of the US as people from other countries almost always have a keen insight into one's own, noticing things that we take for granted.
