The date of Easter is calculated by an algorithm (a set of arithmetical
rules) established as part of the calendar reform instituted by
Pope Gregory (Gregory XIII ?????) about 1582, and adopted in Britain in
1752 or 3.. The algorithm is intended to be an arithmetical simulation
of the rule about "the first Sunday after the first full moon on or
after March 21st" but in some years the simulated moon, which is
definitive for the date of Easter, does not coincide with the real moon.
Some of the history of this is discussed in the book "Puzzles and
Paradoxes" by T.H. O'Beirne (circa 1960). I can give references to
other books in which the algorithm can be found.
