Now I am confused. In England (well, southern England anyway) muffins are a soft-bread round, bun-like item, which is cut in half and toasted. Crumpets are the same size and shape, but harder and with an upper surface full of holes, which are toasted in one piece. When I was younger and based in the West Midlands we knew crumpets as pikelets, but current (supermarket) usage has pikelets as a thinner variant of the modern crumpet.

How does the US "English Muffin" fit in ?
