Very interesting point. In SA, the lake is seen through the eyes of quite small children, so it seems very big, and very "magical". There is a lot more fantasy going on in SA and SD and this diminishes quite fast later on. Horning, Pin Mill or Secret Water are undoubtedly real places, and the problems that the children face are quite real ones.

Part of the charm of SA lies in the fact that two families of children each find that their make-believe game is shared by others, which reinforces it no end.
