The American "English Muffin" sounds like the description of a Muffin - round, softish and flat. I'd always encountered it cut in half and toasted and served with butter and/or jam, until the notorious "Egg McMuffin" - which from Marcus' posting sounds as though it had a New England origin.

The closest thing I'd ever come across in England to an "English Muffin" was a crumpet, which is why I'd made the comparison -- I always thought the American English Muffin was a poor knock-off rather than a reasonable imitation.
