The Canadian government now suggests we call lifejackets "personal flotation devices." When they get around to thinking up a longer name to call them I'll let you know. "Personal saline marine and/or aquatic environments safety buoyancy life-enabling and preservation flotation device" is a likely choice - PSMAESBLEPFDs for short.
