I have wondered the same thing as Johnathan and also these items:

As the adventures took place during the depression of the 1930s, how did these activities resonate with the economically disadvantaged at the time?

Were the S&A viewed as privileged beyond belief? Resented for their situation?

How did the local folks react to publication of stories that basically exposed and exploited their backyard?
