there were at that time opportunities for adventure, and not just for the well off, which are not available in our modern regulated rip-off culture.

a recently deceased friend of mine in our village, still teasingly known as that offcummen frae Barrow - despite having lived here for over fifty years, used to regale us with tales of his shop steward socialist firebrand mother and his cycling and camping exploits in the Lakes in the 20/30s when he and a group of friends used to spend weeks in the summer camped out.

Another younger friend from Ulverston says that Evgenia wasn't popular with children there, when shopping, as grumpy and stuck up !
