FWIW, from S&A, chp XX, Titty Alone, pp210(Godine):

"...Yes, there was an anchor in the bows and a lot of rope. She remembered hearing John tell Susan never to let go the anchor without making sure that the end of the anchor rope was made fast."

Good advice, by my way of thinking. Though I don't think it's fair to have expected John to burrow into Goblin's chain locker and check Jim's opinion on the subject.
