I suppose we all try to make AR in our own image (or an idealised version of it). I see him as left leaning, after his Russian experiences and interested in politics but too skeptical to sign up to any party. Others may prefer to see him through other lenses but just remember he wrote for the (Manchester) Guardian not the Torygraph.
Taking up Peter H's point, it is interesting if regretable that some people do seem ready to dismiss AR as being "middle class and out of touch". I wonder if this is based on seeing the film rather than reading the books?
