Yes, I agree with what Andy says, except for his comment about AR writing for the Manchester Guardian rather than the Telegraph. I don't honestly think this is a significant factor. I have known many journalists, and believe me, their choice of who to write for is governed mainly by who will pay the most! (certainly if they are 'general' journalists, as opposed to specialised political commentators like Polly Toynbee) Incidentally, I think the MG was in AR's time strictly a Liberal newspaper ('Liberal' in the UK Political Party sense), and thus not all that left wing.
