SA was written, I think, before the Wall Street Crash, but there is, to me at least, a slight wiff of escapism about PD and SD which might reflect the conditions of the day. This tone seems to have gone by WH, CC and PP, though.

I'd never thought of that, but I'm sure you could be right. It would explain the complete break with the nature of the previous stories.

Of course, they may also have been a way of coping with the pressure to repeat the success of the Lakeland stories. Few things can be a paralysing as the publisher urging "Go on! Do it again! And by Christmas!"
