"when I were a Lad, we were so poor that we lived in t' paper bag in t' middle of t' road" ...... sorry I had to get that off my chest.

I can remember my first form comprehensive school class English teacher giving us quizzes about books. First question: Which novel begins with: "Roger, aged... " up goes Chorley's hand.....

no one else in the class had heard of Ransome.

This was in the "Black Country" (Wednesbury... nobody cares about Wednesbury...junction 9 on the M6) working class comprehensive school 1969, small percentage of pupils went to sixth form.

In the end our English teacher (or Taecha as they say back wum) divided the class into two groups, one containing me, the other not. I would win every time because the children did not read for enjoyment.

And I longed to be in the Lake District.... still do.
