It is never a good idea to send electronic mail in a hurry. I wrote the offending words in too much haste, as I was just about to set out that morning to exploit the people of the Lake District by sailing on Coniston and visiting AR sites. My excuse is that far from being offended they seemed as hospitable and friendly - and as liable to charge high prices - as ever.

The word 'Marxist' was unnecessary and I apologise if it was found offensive; also I am sorry that I wasn't able to join in an excellent debate. For the record I feel at least as strongly about 'Christian Nonsense' (as opposed to what Jesus actually taught) and Tory Nonsense (without qualification). I won't even mention my views on Republican Nonsense.

I do, however, hold to the view that the Jacksons, Dixons, Billies and their real life counterparts would have thought the original question to be the equivalent in the Cumbrian dialect to the East Anglian "A Load of Old Squit" All the evidence that I have seen and heard is that Lake District people (apart from a few recent incomers) have always been hospitable and laid back. For instance there were never mass trespasses in the Lake District because it never occurred to anybody, rich or poor, to stop people going onto the Fells in the first place.

The rest has all been said
