While turmot may be Manx dialect for turnip, the Isle of Man is a long way from Norfolk and the Manx language would affect their usages even though it was in decline in the 1930s. So you can't really be sure that it means the same in Norfolk dialect which is where I expect Ransome may have heard it used.
