Is someone writing to the OED? I and a group of friends wrote to them aged 11 when we had an English teacher who insisted that 'murmur' was spelt 'murmour' and refused to believe the dictionaries we showed her. The OED sent us a wonderful reply which began, 'Is your teacher very old? The spelling she proposes has been obsolete for several hundred years....'

I would be disappointed to discover that AR had transposed a word to the wrong region - I thought he took dialect more seriously than that! I will send the word to my friend who is Museums Officer for Great Yarmouth and see if anyone there recognises it.
