The other thing to think of is the large number of visitors that would have come to the Broads. They also used to weed for the Policeman ???

and the policeman could have come from anywhere. English grows words by stealing them so it is not unreasonable for a small boy to use a word of derisison particulary if he had heard the policeman call someone that. I think it is a good word to call someone I will have to try it on my daughters.

Having moved to the US when I was 11 and then back to Australia at 13 I learnt a lot of words from the US that were not in Oz and also from reading Ransome, I always thought his was the normal English. It was a long time before I worked out he wrote English slightly better and differently to a lot of people. (Particularly of the Oz variety)

Just a thought.
