Microsoft uses this question to evaluate job candidates:

Here's another one in the same mould. Stretch a string around the equator. Assuming the world really is spherical, with a circumference at the equator of 40,000 kms, and the string is everywhere in contact with the ground, how much longer would you have to make it so that it stands evenly one metre clear of the ground, all the way round?
