It may well have been Dick's lack of experience, but it might also have been Dick's as yet imperfect grasp of the rules of syllogism. I learnt some basic rules of syllogism at school and it was the most valuable lesson I learnt there, no kidding.
Dick made a basic syllogistic error: 'Gold dissolves in aqua regia'; my metal dissolves in aqua regia; therefore my metal is gold. No, not necessarily, as Capn Flint pointed out.
