The passage I remember learning from as a child is in PM, when Dorothea is waiting for the doctor:

It was for moments like that that Dorothea was always my favourite character (and WH was and is my favourite among the books, followed by PM). AR seemed to give her more depth than the others, more inner life. Titty was close, but Dot was juicier. She and Dick were the characters with whom AR seemed to me to have the greatest affinity, and it does make sense. Others have already pointed out that there was a lot of AR in Dick, the scientist with the notebook, And of course Dot was an author, gently satirised with obvious affection. AR was bound to have a great fellow feeling for her.
