The trials of William Mk2 were organised as a race. Lullaby and Wood Violot were one team, and Lustre and Wood Sorrel were the opposition. The Mk2 Williams were set off from Lullaby and Lustre towards (initially) their team mates. William (of course) pulling a piece of thread. There then followed the reported cheating, but eventually both William (Mk2)'s reached their destinations (the Woods). The thread pulled the string, which pulled the rope, as in the books. The rope was then attached to the masts by the throat halyard, and tensioned so it was clear of the water. The "cod liver oil" was sent over from the Lullaby class ships for William. The "supplies" were then hauled from the Wood class ships to the Lullaby class ships. The last of these items was the loaf of bread. To signal the teams victory the loaf was to be hauled to the top of the mast of the Lullaby class ships. However, the race has not yet finished as the time penalties for the aforementioned cheeting have not run out yet! (And probably won't for a good few years!) (The time penalties weren't sevear, there was just a lot of cheating - such as rowing out to get William (tut - tut) and trying to lassoo him (inventive improvisation to encourage him). As you say, the loaf was too light to come back down the mast again, and this is why it stayed there. After much halyard jiggling, poking with the quant, and in some cases lowing the mast, the loaf was finally brought back to deck (along with the block on the halyard so they could hoist the sail). The loaf was, for the duration, in it's plastic manufacturers wrapping, and was later eaten, for lunch, with the rest of the emergency rations.
Hope this answers your questions!
