Peter - do you really mean "Old Francs" - they were abolished by de Gaulle's government in the late fifties or early sixties when they created the "New Franc", worth 100 of the old. If people are still using them to compare prices, it would be like people in Britain using farthings.

Absolutely, yes. As I said, it's dying out because the users are. Oddly enough, people seem to use them a fair bit for house prices. It's those impressive rows of zeros that do it.

Having been in Normandy last week, I was interested to see that many receipts showed a € price with a Franc price underneath, presumably for comparative purposes. I wonder how long that will continue ?

That happens everywhere. On Wednesday I was in a local Leclerc supermarket near the border with Geneva. All the prices were in Euros with indicative price in francs on the label- but the only binding price is the Euro price.

Funnily enough at the till they'll only take Euros, or Swiss francs. French francs are right out.

It'll continue as long as they feel their customers want it.
