In reading Ransome's books aloud, most folks make their best guess at pronunciation - whether it's Latin, broad Yorkshire dialect or Southern gentlemen from America. I read aloud quite a bit and generally attempt to learn the correct pronunciation. I think the use of Latin is marvellous in the S & A series. It gives today's children reason to suspect that there might be something 'more' out there beyond their current sphere of knowledge.
I agree with you about the Latin advantage in education. Actually, there is a growing interest in Latin, particularly in the home schooling community. My 12 yr old starts formal Latin studies this year. Oddly, the dear lady on the CD has a distinctive Southern (USA)accent which lends an interesting flavor to 'amo, ama, amatas...'
