Peter, you'll be pleased to know that it isn't covered in houses and is pretty much still as you describe. The only thing these days is that to cross the Red Sea you need permission of the owners and that only seems to be given once a year for the local church to hold a picnic.
The only other change is to the unamed (in SW) Walton on the Naze which is a more run-down seadside resort than it ever was!
