From Ushant to Scilly may very well be thirtyfive leagues but the song does not say that they ship sighted either of those islands. They "took soundings in the Channel" and might well have sailed close enough to the Dodman and all the other points mentioned.
If the ship was beating up channel, why no mention of points on the French coast?
