Peter:

I am getting deeper into the subject. Explanation as I see it:

1. Commander Walker (TW) has to survey island with his children. The children and he are keen sailors and he wishes to teach them.

2. The instruments he has are compasses and poles and some intelligent children. He could use a thoeolite and tapes etc, but the problem is the cost, the danger in carting them around and then teaching the 14 - 10 year old children to use them. We have trouble teaching 22yr old Texans in a 14 week period to use theodolites let alone young children in short while.

3. I would not use a theodolite to do measurements unless I was absolutely forced to by circumstances and in TW circumstances I would use a $30 compass in stead of a 1200 dollar theodolite. To easy to drop in the water.

4. The compass is broken into 32 segments and then each is quartered so we have 128 named angles. This makes mapping a whole lot more convenient at the level done by John et al..

Now I have to go to class and will continue this upon my return
